Biswajit is a Gotipua, a sacred dancer, 16 years old, who lives in a small village of primitive huts in Orissa, India. At birth, he was given to the temple to resemble a young girl to represent the Devedhasi, the god’s young lover, and dance in honor of the god Shiva. When grown up, he must leave the temple and abandon his greatest passion: the dance. With his master, Jambu, Biswajit departs for Calcutta, hoping his talent for dance can open the door to the world of cinema, but he fails. In the ocean of pilgrims of Allahabad, Biswajit meets Shiva Das as he comes closer to the Hindu doctrine and living saints. Das takes the boy on a journey to help discover his destiny. After the long meditation pilgrimage, the young disciple is ready to accomplish his last dance before being born again to a new life.
