The cathedral complex in Poreč, on the coast of the Istrian Peninsula in western Croatia, is one of the best-preserved complexes of early Christian architecture in the world. It was named after Bishop Euphrasius who refurbished the earlier 5th century basilica, built on the site of an even earlier 4th century church. Bishop Euphrasius furnished the new basilica with an opulent mosaic and built the atrium with a four-sided portico next to the baptistry. He also constructed the diocesan building and the memorial chapel. He made his investment immortal by carving an inscription spanning the central apse of the cathedral. The Basilica has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
