While James Cameron’s “Avatar” is a science fiction fantasy, “Mato Paha” reflects Native American reality and provides a real-life depiction of what still happens when Native American and Dominant Society interests clash over land use. Never before have the sacred places in the Black Hills of South Dakota been described by a Lakota holy man on film. “Mato Paha” is the Lakota name for Bear Butte, a mountain sacred to many Native American peoples. This thought-provoking documentary looks deeply at opinions on both sides of the Bear Butte issue, the ever-tightening grip of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, and oil development threatening the future of this revered mountain.
